The Heart Boogie Tour
On the Beat'n Path
The Heart Boogey Tour was three years in the making – the idea of it was simple – bring together a bunch of like minded musicians and embark on a tour that would highlight a collective of people who looked at and understood music in similar ways
I first came across Tumi and the Volume when I was traveling South Africa. At the time, I had just finished university and was exploring what I should do next. Music has always been at the forefront of my life, and in South Africa I found myself working on some community related music projects. I showed up at a Blackalicious concert one night in Johannesburg had no idea about any of the opening acts. One of them happened to be Tumi and the Volume.
Captivating. That was my impression in a nutshell. The music came from a really honest place. There was no faking it. They blew me away like few bands have in a matter of minutes. With the songs “people, people” and “76”, that was it. I was hooked.
For the Heart Boogie Tour, we brought along a few Toronto friends. Tumi and the Volume, Zaki Ibrahim, Isis and DJ Nana all complimented one another along the way and are all people D6 is proud to know and work with. Each of them brought something unique, and without any one of them, it wouldn’t have been the same.
The music thing is funny – it's about small victories I think. The Montreal Jazz Festival
was something we all promised ourselves we would do three years ago. It was just one gig- at end of the day it came and went- some people saw Tumi and the Volume, some didn’t. But we committed to doing it and got it done. The smallest victories are always the best ones – the keep you grounded and also keep you moving.
Highlights:
Victoria Folk Festival on Canada Day – Montreal Jazz Fest – Beats Breaks and Culture at Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre – visiting the island of Ahousaht for an impromptu show - Nana playing with Questlove in Montreal - recording sessions with G. Sheppard.
Lowlights:
Gas prices - leaving Montreal @ 4 am to sound check @ Harbourfront for 11 am after two weeks of being out on the road
Without the support of many great people, the tour would’ve been nothing more than a daydream. Special thanks to Alok Sharma for the Jazz Fest link, our biggest event to date. Also love to Anna in Vancouver for putting all of us up so graciously in her home, Masia One for holding it down in Montreal with the crew, Zaki Ibrahim for leading the charge and to DJ Loqenz for her on-going consistency.
