Exploring the land of a thousand cultures and a billion people.

Words by Rachna Kothari

Have you ever had a moment when you’ve entered a situation and immediately felt the energy of that space and time seep into your soles of your feet and ultimately reach your soul? The strength of that moment… whether it was at a concert and the music pounded itself into your heart and mind, or you were at a hospital holding the newest addition to your family… can you remember it’s power, the instant that you totally succumbed to what was happening and fell deep into pure bliss?  It’s hard to put that instant into words or even to expect that words would begin to explain what was going on and how you felt.  Now imagine a series of those moments in rapid succession… a constant connection to something bigger, more intense, and steeped in a celebratory tradition.  You’ve just arrived in India.

India is a country, but in a greater sense it’s a colorful tapestry of language, clothing, food, music, and people. India inhales long and deep and exhales giving life to those lucky enough to take in what is being offered.  And if you listen carefully, India will speak to you, she is generous in the way a mother is, relentlessly imparting knowledge and love and not asking for anything in return.  And like a mother, India’s strength is other worldly, selfless, and pure.

Here, in a land that is full of the way things used to be and undergoing a sudden surge toward food court modernity, you are alive.  Aside from the endless feasts being served to you by distant relatives who have in a millisecond become the closest of family, your heart and mind are fed by the realm of possibility.  In a country busting at the seams with more than a billion people you have to stop and recognize the endless potential for anything and everything to happen.  Born from that chaos is a stream of water that flows over the rocks, nurturing its inhabitants, and reminding us all that we can keep cool under the boiling point pressure that is built throughout life.  If India can do it, it only seems to be a logical thought that we all can.

It’s a land of contradictions that are constantly colliding but simultaneously coexisting.  In a heartbeat you can spot the most breathtaking of beauty and the most tumultuous of ugly.  Cotton candy vendors walk alongside sadhus and chukkas alongside gurus.  It’s the contradiction of not knowing what you will encounter next that keeps you alive, piques your curiosity and sustains childlike awe.  And it’s perhaps that idea of not knowing what could come next that keeps everyone living in the moment.  It’s a series of moments that are celebrations exposed in the course of a day… the sparkling smile of a boy who has never known a toothbrush, a festival full of spiritual tradition set in a carnival like setting, a temple built to look like it’s a hundred years old exhibiting an electronic lightshow of philosophical teachings…the realm of possibility… the here and now… the celebration.  It’s a constant reminder to be aware, to be immersed in whatever you are doing, and to live life completely.  Those are the truths India shares with the world, wisdom unselfishly and without motive imparted to those lucky enough to listen.
