Up and Open
Juliana Neufeld opens up her journals to Earwaks
Hidden beneath mattresses from prying eyes, placed under cups of tea on a bedside table, thrown into school bags or tucked into back pockets, journals sit waiting and willing. They are our most patient and loyal confidantes, existing only to serve as witness to our struggles, joys and creative urges. They can be neat and orderly or they can be gloriously messy. Journals are defined only by the spirit of their makers.
Made from bits of days, fond memories and tired evenings, my journals represent the search for joy, truth and adventure amidst the hustle. On nights when I am feeling lost and forgotten, they remain faithful and forgiving. On days when my heart feels full with love and excitement, they are a supportive and willing canvas. My journals are my life in progress. Welcome inside.
Self proclaimed Queen of the wild things, Juliana Neufeld's childhood in the country was spent climbing trees, building forts, scouting for bigfoot and hunting for buried treasure. Today, Juliana spends her time exploring the concrete jungle of Toronto, claiming territory and fraternizing with other creative animals while striving to create a body of work that reflects the same sense of youthful optimism and adventurous spirit amidst the struggles of day to day life. Also an accomplished photographer and illustrator, Juliana's artwork has appeared in Function Magazine, Education Forum, The Ryerson Review of Journalism and Urbanology magazine. When Juliana isn't playing with paint and crayons, she can most likely be found listening to hip hop, sipping tea and pimping her myspace.
