Indiana designer Joe Gonzalez spells it out in style with his bold and gracefully geometric Letter Form Series

Joe Gonzalez is an emerging designer from Indiana. Though he works professionally as an in-house designer on corporate projects, he’s still producing some dynamic personal work, such as the work collected here from his Letter Form Series. Gonzalez’ clean, bold shapes and colours rest on softer, more organic bases, leaving his work sitting comfortably between the natural and the artificial, between handmade character and digital precision. Also included are a couple of self-portraits - the last slide slide is a self-portrait inspired by fragments of conversation between Joe and his tattoo artist Cody while Joe had his shoulder inked.

Reminiscent of the work of Manhattan screen-printing legend Ryan McGinness, Gonzalez’ designs employ symmetry and rhythm to create flowing visual epics. The birth of his first son helped spark the Letter Form Series; he started the poster series as a study: “I wanted to use the letters in an abstract way and experiment with color and composition. Elements in the posters come from my surroundings living in Northwest Indiana there is a lot of wildlife, lakes and beaches. The birds I use in my work are the crazy sea gulls that come inland looking for food. They kind of remind of the way I was starting off just looking for anything and trying to survive.”
