Borat gets nom for Golden Globe amid storm of lawsuits
Wa wa wee wa!! The misogonystic, anti-Semitic misadventures of Sacha Baron Cohen's brilliantly subversive perv have burst into world cinema, leaving a trail of controversy, litigation and critical acclaim in their wake. It's pretty rare that a film, a comedy at that, stirs up such a fuss.
From Kazakh citizens and government crying slander over Cohen's portrayal, to a string of lawsuits brought forward by bigots unwittingly outed by Borat's sly tactics, to celebrity divorce (Pamela Anderson and Kid Rock are rumoured to have split over her involvement in the film), Borat: Cultural Learnings of America For Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan is having quite an impact.
Just this week, Borat was sued by a group of young American men who were duped by Cohen and Co. into getting plastered, unveiling their hidden racism, and generally making fools of themselves. That lawsuit was tossed out as baseless, but was followed up by the threat of another lawsuit from a Macedonian folk singer over a song used in the film among others.
All the uproar has gone a long way in bolstering Cohen's efforts to put a spotlight on the anti-Semitism he so expertly coaxes out of many of the people he comes in contact with. Cohen, himself a devout Jew, is serious about this aspect of the message in his work, even stepping out of character during interviews on occasion to underline his point.
All the backlash took a positive turn yesterday as Borat landed some significant nominations for the Golden
Globe awards, the notorious harbingers of Oscar glory. Cohen's balls-out (or just barely in if swimwear is involved) humour and relentless commitment to character in the real world are definitely worth the attention. Unfortunately, Borat was unable to hear the news right away, but Sacha Baron Cohen had this to say on his behalf:
"I am extremely honored ... I have been trying to let Borat know this great news but for the last four hours both of Kazakhstan's telephones have been engaged. Eventually, Premier Nazarbayev answered and said he would pass on the message as soon as Borat returned from Iran, where he is guest of honor at the Holocaust Denial Conference."
