Coachella 2007Coachella 2007

Much more than any burnt-out rocker could ever hope for.

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival has always been the music festival that music-lovers go to. Not that the scenester high-school kiddies aren’t welcome, (you’re not by the way), it’s just that Coachella has never been about pushing musical fads in order to turn a profit.

Willie Nelson is one of the major acts, along with Björk, Peaches, El-P, Lupe Fiasco, Infected Mushroom, The Roots and, of course, this years most antipated act, Rage Against the Machine. News of the Rage Against the Machine reunion has spread across blogosphere like wild fire. Angst-filled rockers will flock to Cali solely for this act, which will surely help the promoters cover their bottom line.

But despite the built in high profile of this years festival, it has taken Coachella many years to finally reach a point where its organizers consider it to be stable. First starting shortly after the bag of crap that was Woodstock ’99, Coachella was a music festival with good intentions; free bottles of water and a diverse and progressive line-up  helped Coachella make a name for itself. Despite the good will created, it did not help it this first event make any money.

At the inaugural event, only 25,000 people streamed in throughout the festival’s two days, far less than hoped. This forced promoters to hold off on Coachella in 2000, only to return for a one day event in 2001 with a reunion of Jane’s Addiction. This year will mark the first time Coachella will finally run for 3 days, something that was intended since it first began.
